Future of DuPage County electronics recycling programs uncertain after vendor stops service

Published: Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 5:19 p.m. CST

The vendor that collected used electronics for recycling in DuPage County will no longer provide the service – leaving the future of many programs in doubt.

As of July 29, Creative Recycling Systems will halt collection service, said county spokeswoman Johnna Kelly.

The vendor is involved in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit in Tampa, Fla., according to media reports.

County staff are looking for ways to maintain the service, according to a news release, but no other contractors have been willing to continue under the terms of the previous agreement, which included pick up and recycling at no cost to the county or municipalities.

The county helps facilitate recycling with eight municipalities and two townships with regular drop off sites.

Several other area vendors also collect electronics. A list can be found at www.dupageco.org/EDP.
