World War II veteran to speak at air, water expo

ELMHURST – A Book Above will host a free Air and Water Expo on Saturday with presentations by aviation and sea experts, including a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Steve Vanides, a petty officer second class, will share stories about his service in the Philippines as a Morse code operator.

A Book Above will offer 10 percent off air and water books during the event.

The event is sponsored by Readers Ignite.

9 a.m.: Major Gerry Baumgartner, Civil Air Patrol, Clow International Airport in Bolingbrook

10 a.m.: Howard Bifeld, Blue Max Radio Control Flying Club vice president

11 a.m.: Captain Gary Sprigg, Civil Air Patrol, Illinois Wing Group 2, Orland Park

Noon: Michael Pfeifer, Naperville Propmasters

2 p.m.: Steve Vanides, U.S. Navy World War II veteran
