Sports briefs: Jim Thome baseball camp coming to Glen Ellyn

Jim Thome to be featured at Silver Slugger Camp

The Bulls/Sox Academy will host a Silver Slugger camp that will feature instruction from former White Sox standout Jim Thome at Ackerman Park in Glen Ellyn from August 18 to 21.

The camp is for players ages 8 to 12 and the cost is $275.

Thome will be on hand for the Wednesday of the camp to provide hitting instruction. Campers can also have their picture taken with Thome and have an item autographed.

Each camp participant receives two tickets to a White Sox home game on August 19, an opportunity to watch White Sox batting practice at the game, six ticket vouchers to a 2014 White Sox game, a replica jersey, a Jim Thome White Sox t-shirt, a Bulls/Sox ball cap and an official Major League baseball.

Golden Eagles Jamboree kicks off youth football season

The Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles youth football program will kick off the 2014 season with its ninth annual Golden Eagles Jamboree at Newton Park in Glen Ellyn on Saturday and Sunday.

The event includes scrimmages among several youth football programs from the area, including the Golden Eagles, Wheaton Rams, Downers Grove Panthers, Naperville Chargers, Addison Cowboys, Lyons Football Club Tigers, Lemont Hornets, Elmhurst Eagles, Carol Stream Panthers, Hinsdale Falcons, Streamwood Falcons, Glendale Heights Spartans and West Chicago Wildcats.

Rock the Night 5k rolls into Soldier Field

RAM Racing will bring its Rock the Night 5k to Soldier Field on Aug. 21.

The race will take participants on a 5k run or walk from Soldier Field, along the lakefront and back to the stadium. The event starts at 7 p.m. Big Head Todd and the Monsters will play a post-race concert at Soldier Field.

The cost to participate is $45 through Aug. 7. Tickets just for the concert cost $25.

3-on-3 hoops tourney coming to Hinsdale

The Community House in Hinsdale will host its first ever 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Aug. 24.

There will be division for 15 different age groups: Fourth grade boys and girls, fifth grade boys and girls, sixth grade boys and girls, seventh grade boys and girls, eighth grade boys and girls, frosh/soph boys and girls, men's and women's open, and men's 35-years and older.

All grades are based on the upcoming school year. High school juniors and seniors will play in the men's or women's open divisions.

Teams are limited to four players and are guaranteed a minimum of two games. Games begin at 9 a.m. and will be played outdoors at the Community House.

The cost is $160 per team through Aug. 4 and $180 through Aug. 18.

Cantigny to host Chicago Open

The Chicago Open golf tournament will be played at Cantigny Golf Oct. 5 to 7. This is the 100th anniversary of the tournament and is being hosted by Cantigny during its 25th anniversary season.

Players wishing to compete in the 54-hole tourney can gain entry into the field at one of five qualifiers being held in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Village Links of Glen Ellyn will host a qualifier on Sept. 8. The cost to enter that tourney starts at $100 and the entry deadline is Aug. 21.

Past champions of the Chicago Open include Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Ken Venturi and Luke Donald.

Bolingbrook baseball to host free clinic

Players and coaches from Bolingbrook High School's baseball teams will host a free defensive skills clinic as part of the program's annual fall preview on Aug. 23.

The event starts at 10 a.m. on the varsity field at BHS. The day will feature a scrimmage between Lukanic and Brooks Middle Schools, a lunch and meet-and-greet with BHS players at noon, and a free defensive clinic for players of all ages at 1 p.m. There will also be individual position workouts for pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. No registration is required.

Mini-triathlon coming to Five Seasons

Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Burr Ridge will host an indoor mini-triathlon on Aug. 23.

The event, which will consist of a three-mile treadmill run, 10-mile stationary bike ride and 1,000-meter swim, is open to the public and will have three divisions: Ages 18 to 29, ages 30 to 49, and 50-plus. The top finishers in each age group will receive first-place prizes.

Registration costs $29 through Friday and $49 thereafter. The registration period ends Aug. 15.
