MCCD People and Nature Program to explore prairies, savannas

RINGWOOD – The prairies and savannas that covered large swaths of McHenry County before the arrival of Europeans will be the topic of an upcoming course offered by the McHenry County Conservation District.

The class is part of the district’s People and Nature Program, which is designed for private land owners, homeowners, natural areas stewards and anyone interested in how nature works and how it can be protected.

Participants will learn about the many hundreds of plant species that inhabited these ecosystems and how to identify them in the effort to aid in restoration.

The class, called Plants of Prairies and Savannas, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. Registration is required by Tuesday.

Most of the class will be outdoors. Students, who need to be at least 14 years old, should dress for the weather and bring a sack lunch and something to drink.

This workshop is required to earn an Ecological Restoration Certificate.

The cost is $40 for county residents and $45 for nonresidents.

Registration is available online at; through drop-off at Glacial Park Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood; or through drop-off or by mail at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
