New business activity slated for Harvard

HARVARD – Activity for two new businesses will soon begin in Harvard, and the city’s Economic Development Corp. has hopes for more to come in the future.

“The only thing we have confirmed is O’Reilly Auto Parts, which has acquired a piece of land [last year],” Executive Director Charlie Eldredge said. “They’re in the permitting process now.”

The auto parts store has not yet given an exact construction start date, Eldredge said, but he guessed if not in fall 2014, it will begin in spring 2015. The land, he added, is on Route 14 directly west of Wal-Mart Supercenter, 21101 McGuire Road.

In addition, a Casey’s General Store, which was announced last fall and has been under construction since May or June, will likely open within the next couple of months, Eldredge said.

“The plan was to be open in the fall,” he said.

Casey’s, which will consist of the standard services such as gasoline and a mini market, is on Route 14, just south of Airport Road.

As for future endeavors, Eldredge revealed no specifics about potential businesses, but did say there are industry gaps wanting to be filled.

“We have a desire for more restaurants,” he said. “Chain restaurants would be very welcome in Harvard, and we’d like a full-service grocery store.”

Eldredge added since the loss about six weeks ago of Cash Savers, previously located at 1299 S. Division St., the only full-service grocery store is Wal-Mart.

He said nothing is confirmed as any potential incomings are dependent on the businesses themselves.

“The Harvard EDC is here to help people who wish to come to Harvard,” he said. “We do everything we possibly can to coordinate things and help them along, but it’s up to the businesses.”
