Child dies in Bensenville house fire

BENSENVILLE – A 4-year-old boy died in a Bensenville house fire Wednesday.

Martin Pletz of Bensenville was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, according to a DuPage County Coroner's Office news release.

The office completed an autopsy Thursday, but the results are pending further investigation by the Coroner's Office, Bensenville Police Department and DuPage County Arson Task Force, the release stated.

Bensenville firefighters responded to the call at 2:04 p.m. in the 100 block of West Devon Avenue. When they arrived, smoke and flames were visible from the back of the one-story brick ranch house, according to a news release from the Bensenville Fire Protection District.

Witnesses notified firefighters that the child was trapped inside, and crews began an aggressive attack on the main floor fire, which extended into the roof line, the release stated.

Pletz was found inside the home and pronounced dead.

One other resident of the home was treated for minor injuries and transported to Alexian Brothers Hospital, according to the release.

Two dogs also were found dead at the scene, the release stated.

The fire, which remains under investigation, caused significant damage and displaced the home's seven residents, according to the release.

Any donations for the family can be sent to the Bensenville Fire Protection District Headquarters at 500 S. York Road.
