SPRING GROVE – A man died Sunday after his motorcycle struck the back of a mini-van in front of him, fire officials said.

David M. Stoll, 65, of Fox Lake, was pronounced dead at 11:08 a.m. at Centegra Hospital – McHenry, about an hour and 40 minutes after the incident.

The Spring Grove and Richmond fire departments were dispatched at 9:28 a.m. for the accident near Route 173 and Winn Road in Spring Grove, Richmond Fire Ltnt. Keven Barnes said.

Stoll was traveling west on Route 173 behind a minivan when, to avoid a rear-end collision with a westbound van slowing to turn left in front of him, he swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic and laid down his motorcycle, according to a news release from the McHenry County Coroner.

Stoll was "subsequently struck by the rear tire of the minivan making a left turn," the release said.

The coroner's office concluded after an examination that Stoll died of multiple blunt force injuries to the chest and body.

A toxicology is pending, the release said.

Flight for Life was put on standby during the incident before authorities ultimately decided to transport Stoll via ambulance, Spring Grove Police Sgt. Stan St. Clair said.

Crews were assisted on scene by the Critical Accident Investigations Team, which consists of personnel from McHenry, Johnsburg and Spring Grove.

The incident is under an ongoing investigation.
