CARPENTERSVILLE – Authorities have recovered the body of a man who was caught in a heavy current while swimming across the Fox River on Sunday.
The man was found dead about 5 p.m. in the river near Angelina Place. His name is being withheld pending the notification of relatives, according to a joint news release from the Carpentersville fire and police departments.
Crews were called to the area just after 10 a.m. for the incident.
Three men were at the river fishing when two of them attempted to swim across the river, according to the release. One man told police he quickly became exhausted fighting the heavy current and that he looked back at one point and saw his friend struggling.
The man reached a nearby island, where he was later rescued by Carpentersville Fire Department personnel. His friend was last seen in the water south of Angelina Place, the release said.
The third man didn’t enter the water.
MABAS Divisions 2, 4, and 5 assisted Carpentersville with rescue and recovery resources, including divers and scanning sonar equipment, the release said.
The Carpentersville Police Department and Kane County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
