Upcoming programs explore insects, birds

Poetry, art and games are all ways kids and families will explore nature at upcoming McHenry County Conservation District programs.

The programs are designed for varying age groups, from infants to adults, and require prior registration. They include:

• Nature’s Play Time: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Rush Creek Conservation Area, 20501 McGuire Road, Harvard. Infants to five-year-olds will use nature to build skills. A snack will be provided, but accompanying adults should bring sun screen, extra water, long sleeves or pants in case there are a lot of bugs. The program is free for county residents and $3 for non-residents. The registration deadline is July 26.

• Cartooning Nature: 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. Kids 8 to 13 years old will learn to draw easy cartoon animals and plants. The class is taught by Susan Sieber, an art instructor at McHenry County College and the nonprofit arts studio Creative Arts, Inc. The program costs $12 for county residents and $15 for non-residents. The registration deadline is July 28.

• The Secret Ways of the Egret: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, 13315 Pleasant Valley Road, Woodstock. Aftering hearing poems by Jane Yolan all about egrets, children 5 to 9 years old will play games, do a small craft and search for the white birds. The program is free for county residents and $3 for non-residents. The registration deadline is July 29.

• Insect Songs: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Rush Creek Conservation Area, 20501 McGuire Road, Harvard. Adults and families will learn about the calls of field crickets, tree crickets, cicadas and katydids. The program is free for county residents and $2 for non-residents. The registration deadline is July 30.
