The Department in downtown Joliet, which closed in March, may reopen as a new restaurant soon.

JOLIET – A new restaurant called Juliet’s is being planned in the former location of The Department, 205 N. Chicago St.

Mayor Tom Giarrante confirmed Wednesday that Carmen Rossi, a Frankfort attorney and Chicago-area restaurateur, has applied for a liquor license for the business.

“He has four restaurants in Chicago, so we’re really excited about working this out with him,” Giarrante said.

Giarrante said he didn’t know if Rossi plans to renovate the building.

“He hasn’t applied for any building permits yet,” Giarrante said.

The Department closed in March.

Rossi operates the Hubbard Inn,Barn & Company, Lincoln Avenue Social and the soon-to-open Pomp & Circumstance.
