SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland families looking to stretch their budget have the chance to get free clothing today and Thursday in Sugar Grove.
The Good Samaritan Clothing Closet is open today from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon in the back of the Sugar Grove Community Building, 141 Main St. Enter through the rear entrance. Carol Alfrey, executive director of Conley Outreach and closet founder, said the clothing closet began several years ago in response to the economy as a way to help people stretch their money.
The monthly event draws anywhere from a few dozen visitors to more than 100, Alfrey said, noting it is limited to residents of Kaneland School District 302 and Big Rock. First-time visitors must present a photo ID to register, she said, noting there are no income requirements.
Because the Good Samaritan Clothing Closet has a lot of donations – it currently is overstocked – Alfrey said organizers can be “very particular” about what to keep. She described the inventory as “the best of the best.”
Selections include clothing for all sizes and ages – infants, children, teens and adults – as well as a mix of styles, such as casual and professional items.
All clothing is free, Alfrey said, but there is a limit of four items per family member with a maximum of 20 items a family. Although no donations are being accepted, Alfrey said volunteers always are needed to check people in and to straighten up. Call 630-365-2880 for information.
The Good Samaritan Clothing Closet is open the third Wednesday of each month and the following Thursday.
