ST. CHARLES – An upscale consignment shop in St. Charles recently closed its doors, according to its website and city officials.

“Claudia’s Closet has closed forever as of June 30,” read a statement on the business website and Facebook page. “We’d like to thank the many friends we made while we were in business. We loved meeting you and hope we’ll meet again.”

Owner Patti Cichon took over the business from Karla Sitko, said Matt O’Rourke, St. Charles economic development division manager. Sitko opened the store with her mother, Beverly Schuler, in April 2011.

“It didn’t work out the way they had hoped, unfortunately,” O’Rourke said on Thursday.

Various items of clothing from the store went to different places to benefit others, such as Cinderella’s Closet and Mooseheart, according to the store’s Facebook page. Cichon did not immediately return a phone message on Thursday seeking comment.

Another business on Main Street that closed this year was Angel Kisses, which sold religious merchandise, books and other gifts. The shop was at 504 E. Main St. in St. Charles and was owned by John and Patricia Kulpin.

Angel Kisses closed toward the beginning of the year and its space is now occupied by a shop that sells electronic cigarettes, O’Rourke said.

Despite the closings, O’Rourke said there also are several other businesses that plan to open soon or later this year.

He gave the example of O’ Sole Mio holding a ribbon-cutting event today at 4:30 p.m. for its St. Charles location at 131 S. First St., the former site of Dolce Bakery and Cafe.

“We’re starting to see some growth in downtown,” O’Rourke said.
