Elmhurst church breaks ground on new welcome center

ELMHURST – Mayor Steve Morley and other elected officials joined Bethel United Church of Christ Senior Minister Rev. Gretchen Sylvester and others June 8 for the Bethel Welcome Center groundbreaking.

The construction of the new center will complete a six-year, $3 million “Journey Forward” Campaign to fund expanded programming and facilities for Bethel’s congregation and the community at large, according to a church news release.

In addition to adding the Welcome Center, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, Bethel purchased two properties on Huntington Lane, funded the position of Christian education and youth director, and completed extensive repairs and upgrades to the existing church and Bethel Learning Center facilities, the release said.
