CAROL STREAM – When it comes to cracking down on drunk drivers, Carol Stream’s Police Department, along with other suburban police departments, tops the list for number of arrests.
In 2013, Carol Stream had 392 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, preceded by Springfield with 410 arrests, Decatur with 485 arrests, Naperville with 553 arrests and Rockford with 556 arrests, according to a survey by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.
Brian Cooper, traffic sergeant for the Carol Stream Police Department, said 161 DUI arrests have been made so far for 2014. He added officers are well trained for DUI detection and enforcement.
“Typically a drunk driver will require a trip to the hospital for a blood or urine test,” he said. “We do the tests in the station. That cuts down the time and hassle of going to the hospital.”
The sergeant said within the last seven years, Carol Stream has had one DUI related fatality. He added other surrounding towns have had at least one or two DUI related fatalities each year for the past seven years.
In the same 2013 DUI survey, Carol Stream had the highest DUI rate in the state among departments with at least 200 arrests, with 6.43 arrests per sworn officer.
Cooper said there are 26 drug recognition experts in the state who account for 26 percent of DUI arrests.
