WATERMAN – A Downers Grove man was killed Friday after his motorcycle collided with a van at the intersection of Route 23 and Chicago Road, DeKalb County Sheriff’s police said.

James W. Velguth, 60, of the 5700 block of Sherman in Downers Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 7:12 p.m., according to a police news release.

Police said Emmanuel Gomez-Torres, 19, of the 200 block of Marilyn Avenue in Glendale Heights, was driving east on Chicago Road in a 1999 Chevrolet van. Gomez-Torres told police he stopped at the stop sign, then continued east through the intersection, where his van collided with Velguth, who was northbound on Route 23.

Gomez-Torres was cited for failure to yield at a stop intersection. Police said Velguth was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. There were no other injuries.

The crash occurred south of Waterman, and police and firefighters from Waterman assisted at the scene, along with firefighters from Hinckley and Somonauk.
