Judge revokes bond for Wonder Lake man awaiting sentencing

WOODSTOCK – A Wonder Lake man had his bond revoked and was remanded to custody after being arrested while awaiting sentencing on a 2012 drug charge.

Andrew J. Lazar, previously pleaded guilty to unlawfully delivering heroin, and a sentencing date had been set for Aug. 1.

He later was re-arrested on June 13, accused of lying to police who came to serve his girlfriend with a warrant. Lazar told police, authorities said, that Paige Thorne was at the dentist, but they found her hiding in a garage.

Before McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather revoked Lazar's bond, his attorney, Special Public Defender Justin Hansen argued that the state hadn't proven that there was enough grounds for Lazar's arrest, which came at least a week after Thorne was arrested on the warrant.

Lazar is charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive and obstructing justice, and is awaiting indictment.

"The state may not agree with who Mr. Lazar's friends are, but that's not a condition of his bond," Hansen said.

The judge ultimately rejected the state's request to increase Lazar's bond to $240,000, instead revoking it entirely and putting him in handcuffs in open court.

Assistant State's Attorney Patrick Kenneally has said that Lazar was believed to be involved in a 2009 fatal heroin drug deal that killed 36-year-old Rustin Cawthon. Lazar never was charged in that incident.

Cawthon's former girlfriend Amanda Coots later was convicted of drug-induced homicide.

Lazar faces between three to seven years in prison on the drug charge.
