Local towns gear up for the Fourth

As the Fourth of July quickly approaches, area residents have many options to celebrate Independence Day.

Here is what's happening in the West Chicago area:

West Chicago

What: Military Appreciation Day

When: All day Friday

Where: Turtle Splash Water Park, 129 W. National St.

Details: The West Chicago Park District is saluting military personnel by offering one free water park admission to guests who bring their military IDs.

What: Firecracker 5K Run/Walk

Where: Begins at the Warrenville Park District Recreation Center, 3S260 Warren Ave.

When: 8 to 10 a.m. Friday

Details: This annual run uses a course certitifed by USA Track & Field. In addition to the 5K race, there will be 50- and 100-yard dashes for children. A portion of all proceeds will help fund scholarships for kids to participate in Park District programs.

What: Fourth of July Celebration and Parade

When: 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday

Where: Parade begins Thursday in downtown, traveling south on Warren Avenue, west on Warrenville Road and south on Curtis Avenue, before disbanding at Curtis Avenue and Woodland Road. Festivities then continue at Cerny Park, located at South Forest View and Warren avenues. On Friday, a children's parade starts at Warren Avenue and Warenville Road and travels south on Warren Avenue to Cerny Park, where the celebration continues.

Details: Festivities include concessions, musical performances, karaoke, children's activities, contests, patriotic ceremonies, bingo and more.

What: Second Annual Cerny Series

When: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Baseball field at Cerny Park, South Forest View and Warren avenues

Details: Warrenville Athletic Assocation will host its second annual Cerny Park baseball series. Pop and water concessions will be open during the games.

Want to keep the celebration going? West Chicago will host its annual Railroad Days festival July 10 through 13 at Reed-Keppler Park, 129 W. National St. Highlights of the celebration will include a parade, four-day carnival, fireworks and entertainment.
