Lightning causes house fire in Wonder Lake

WONDER LAKE – A fire caused by a lightning strike caused less than $10,000 in damage to the roof of a home very early Monday morning, a fire official said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded at 12:55 a.m. Monday to the 8100 block of Howe Road, just outside Wonder Lake, when the homeowners reported that their house had been struck by lightning, Firefighter Kyle Seegers said.

The residents were in the basement during the storm, preemptively taking safety ahead of tornado sirens going off, he said. They felt and heard the lightning strike the house and went out to check.

When firefighters arrived, they found the roof of the two-story home on fire, Seegers said.

Crews were able to quickly contain the fire, keeping it outside the home, he said, adding that the department was able to cancel the MABAS call it had initially put out.

Seegers estimates the damage to the home at $10,000 with light water damage the only interior issue. There were no injuries, he said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District was assisted on scene by departments from Hebron, Spring Grove, Richmond and Woodstock. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office was also on scene, and an ambulance from Marengo covered Wonder Lake's calls while it handled the fire.
