Lakewood to add MCRide service

LAKEWOOD – Residents in the village will soon have access to the MCRide Dial-a-Ride service.

The village will officially join the program on July 1. Residents in Lakewood using the dial-a-ride program will be able to travel to locations within the village, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Woodstock, the Valley Hi Nursing Home, the McHenry County Division of Transportation and the Fox Lake Metra station.

Riders also will be able to travel within three-quarters of a mile of Route 120 between McHenry and Woodstock, within three-quarters of a mile of Route 14 between Woodstock and Crystal Lake, and within three quarters of a mile of Route 31 between Crystal Lake and McHenry.

MCRide is a service provided by the participating municipalities, the county and the Pace Suburban Bus service.

Lakewood has to contribute a little more than $7,600 a year toward the program.

Service will be curb to curb, said Village Manager Catherine Peterson.

"It will pick you up in front of your house and take you where you want to go," Peterson said.

The service can be for people who may need transportation to work, school, shopping or to visit a friend, according to a news release.

There are no age restrictions for using the service, Peterson said.

There is a cost for riders to use the service. The first five miles of a ride costs $2, and 25 cents for each additional mile.

For seniors or people with disabilities the cost is $1 for the first five miles, and 25 cents for each additional mile.

The service runs from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Riders are asked to call a day ahead to reserve a pickup, or two hours in advance if calling on the same day.

Bringing a form of public transportation into the village has been a frequent request during Peterson's 12 years with Lakewood.

"We certainly have senior citizens who don't have access to transportation," Peterson said. "It's been a frequently requested service the entire time I've been here."
