'Happy' dancers sought for Sugar Grove Corn Boil

SUGAR GROVE – Renee Dee of the Kindness Campaign is seeking people ready to dance at next month's Sugar Grove Corn Boil.

The "Happy Dance" will be featured during the July 25 opening ceremony at the festival grounds behind John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove.

The theme for the opening ceremony is "Kindness in the Community."

Dee wrote in an email that she has helped coordinate past opening ceremonies with Dave Paluch, and they thought the theme would be a fitting way to celebrate everyone's efforts in the Kindness Campaign.

"It makes me very happy and proud of our efforts but also reminds us that we still have lots of work to do," Dee said. "Many people do not understand or care about the purpose of the Kindness Campaign."

The Kindness Campaign is a community effort to spread goodwill throughout the Kaneland area.

The line dance will begin after the parade at about 5:20 p.m. in front of the main stage area. All are invited to join in or cheer on the dancers, who will be led by the Chicago Bears mascot, Staley Da Bear.

Jenny O'Brien of Dreams Dance Academy in La Fox choreographed the dance. Visit and click the "Parade and Opening Ceremony" link under the "Entertainment" tab to learn the steps.

Sugar Grove community groups – such as PTOs, Scouts, businesses and sports organizations – also are invited to participate in the 5 p.m. parade.

Organizers are asking participating groups to wear their uniforms or the "Be Happy" T-shirts that will be available for $10 at the Sugar Grove Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon on July 12 and 19, Dee said. She said the most spirited group will win a pizza party.

Dee said events like the dance and parade are perfect gathering places and opportunities to build community.

"The more we can get the kids and community members involved in celebrating kindness, the better choices we will all make as individuals and groups," Dee said. "We need to empower our kids to be nice. They all want to be nice – it is the community as a whole that determines what is and is not socially acceptable."
