Elburn supports construction of DeKalb bus depot

Depot would provide daily bus service to Elburn train station

ELBURN – Village officials are supporting a project that would provide daily shuttle bus service from the Voluntary Action Center in DeKalb to the Metra station in Elburn.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson recently sent a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx stating his support for the proposed $15.7 million bus depot. The city is requesting $11.4 million in federal funds, which would be matched by $3.5 million in state funds and $750,000 in local funding.

State funding already has been secured, and DeKalb County has already committed a $750,000 land donation to the project. The bus depot would be built on 10 acres at Peace and Barber Greene roads in DeKalb.

"It gives people a chance to come to Elburn," Anderson said. "We've got plenty of positive things going on."

The project would provide additional bus lines between Elburn and DeKalb. Right now, bus service is provided between Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and the Metra train station in Elburn only on Fridays and Sundays, he said.

"This would add to it," Anderson said.

He also pointed out the environmental benefits of providing additional public transportation.

"It helps to minimize exhaust fumes from automobiles," Anderson said.
