DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police officers will work "saturation patrols" to target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones over the Fourth of July, the department announced in a press release.

The department is participating in a yearlong initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including the Fourth of July.

While celebrating during the Fourth of July, police asked residents to use caution on the road.

"The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest times for traffic crashes due to a rise in impaired driving," the department stated in the press release. "During the 2013 Fourth of July period, 540 people were killed in traffic crashes; in addition, there were 58,000 injuries associated with traffic crashes during the same time.

"Drinking and driving played a major role in these crashes. While these fatalities are devastating, they are fully preventable by having a plan."

Police reminded revelers to plan a safe way home before heading out, picking a designated driver and to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. Motorists were also reminded to wear their seatbelts.
