Riverside waiting for response from Army Corps for fix to Swan Pond

RIVERSIDE – Representatives of the Army Corps of Engineers took a tour of Swan Pond in Riverside June 16 to survey flood damage to the area.

The area has regularly flooded since the winter when ice sheets picked up and moved a bed of plantings that was built to divert flood waters to a culvert and back to the Des Plaines River. Water now pools in front of the culvert instead of flowing out.

The Public Works Department is still working to clear debris from winter flooding in Swan Pond, which, along with standing water, has prevented them from doing much regular maintenance, like mowing the grass.

Village Manager Peter Scalera said Thursday that he does not know when the village can expect to hear from the Corps about a timetable for fixing the problem. The village maintains that the Corps are financially responsible for the mess and the fix, not the village.

Scalera said he would update the board when new information was provided to the village.
