Former Fox Lake employee sues village

FOX LAKE – A former Fox Lake village employee is suing the village over his firing.

The complaint filed in federal court by Keith Peterson, a former water and sewer department employee, accuses the village of violating his due process rights.

The village has not been served in connection to the lawsuit, Fox Lake Village Administrator Anne Marrin said, adding that she has no additional information about the case.

Marrin confirmed that Peterson was a village employee.

Peterson was fired in June 2012 with a Village Board vote less than a month after he met with the village attorney over allegations of harassment, according to the complaint.

The Village Board discussed the situation during a closed-door meeting and subsequently voted to terminate his employment, the complaint said, adding that Peterson was not allowed to attend the meeting, and he was not given a written explanation of the charges.

By failing to inform Peterson in writing on his dismissal, the complaint charges that the village violated its own ordinances and denied Peterson his due process.

The complaint requests that Peterson be compensated at least $75,000 plus attorney fees and other costs, have his employment reinstated, and have his lost pension credits and benefits restored.
