White Stag Tavern in St. Charles has closed

ST. CHARLES – The White Stag Tavern closed its doors in early May, said the property owner where the business was located.

"He didn't have enough business," Mary Ann Krempel said Wednesday of Chris Yovanovic, her former tenant and White Stag Tavern owner.

Krempel said she is in the process of fixing up the property, at 1307 E. Main St., so that it might be leased or sold. She was at the property this week with a small crew doing maintenance work.

Yovanovic did not return phone messages seeking comment. He opened the tavern in August 2011 and told the Kane County Chronicle at the time that he offered American, as well as English food because he noticed that European-themed pubs seemed to last longer than a typical American bar.

The tavern held pool tournaments, according to the last few entries dated December 2013 on its Facebook page. The Facebook page had no information about the closure and there were no bar stools, pool tables or regular tables visible on the property Wednesday.

Jessica Muranyi said she saw a man move some of the tavern's tables behind the property in May. She works as a teacher at Cyndirella's Academy of Style & Beauty at 1301 E. Main St., next to the tavern.

The former tavern building has been home to several businesses over the years, including Sugo Italian Ristorante. Krempel said part of the building dates to the 19th century, but has one addition and at least two remodelings.

Krempel said she is going to have a real estate agent market the building.
