McHENRY – A high rating from a prestigious medical organization is evidence of top quality cardiac care at Centegra Hospital-McHenry, hospital officials said.
The local hospital last week earned the highest three-star rating for cardiac surgery quality from the Chicago-based Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
"We are very excited about this," said Connie Secor, director of surgical and cardiovascular services.
Secor said the hospital volunteered several years ago to submit various metrics for a national database. Those metrics – survival rate, complication rate, best practice medication usage, among others – are what's used to set the ratings.
About 10 percent of hospitals nationwide receive the three-star rating, Secor said.
"I think this helps distinguish the quality provided in the health care system," Secor said. "It's an important quality tool to measure our outcomes and compare ourselves to the national average."
While various awards have been given to the hospital over the years, senior public relations coordinator Michelle Green said the three-star rating is "cream of the crop" for recognitions.
Secor said this should serve as evidence to those on the receiving end of the program.
"For the patient population receiving cardiac care," she said, "this is evidence that they're receiving good quality care."
