Former Addison cop out on bond after pleading guilty to reckless firearm discharge

ADDISON – A former Addison police officer is out on bond after pleading guilty to a felony charge of recklessly discharging a firearm and will enter the DuPage County Mental Illness Court Alternative Program.

Danny Owens, 40, of the 1300 block of Big Horn Trail, Carol Stream, was released on $25,000 bond May 30 after pleading guilty to the felony charge, DuPage County State's Attorney's Office spokesman Paul Darrah said.

In addition to a slew of conditions Owens will need to satisfy in order to complete the program, he is required to wear a location monitoring device, Darrah said.

Upon completion of the program, prosecutors will allow Owens to withdraw his guilty plea and plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted reckless discharge of a firearm, Darrah said.

Owens discharged his firearm at about 4:30 a.m. Dec. 23, 2013, in his Carol Stream home, according to court records.

The following day, his wife filed an order of protection against him.

Owens was charged with violating that order of protection after texting photos of his blood on the floor of the Carol Stream home the couple once shared to his wife at 10:43 a.m. Jan. 31, Darrah said.

Owens also pleaded guilty to violating the order of protection May 30, but sentencing on that charge will be withheld pending his completion of the court alternative program, Darrah said.

Owens is due in court June 27 for a status hearing.
