CREST HILL – A California man turned himself in to police Monday for arrest on charges of sexual abuse that allegedly occurred 15 years ago.

Crest Hill police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said a woman in her early 20s contacted police in March to report Carlos Sandoval, 39, had sex with her when she was 7- and 8-years-old. The incidents occurred in 1998 and 1999 while Sandoval was married to a relative of the victim, Wilkerson said.

Sandoval moved to Whittier, California, after divorcing the victim’s relative, Wilkerson said.

“We contacted a detective from Whittier who interviewed Sandoval [who] made statements admitting the assault and abuse,” Wilkerson said. Crest Hill police obtained a warrant charging Sandoval with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual assault.

Sandoval was booked into the Will County jail and is being held on $200,000 bond.
