Elburn Youth League prepares Blackberry fields

ELBURN – The Blackberry Retention Fields in Elburn should be in playable shape by late June or early July, the Elburn Baseball and Softball organization's president said.

The organization signed a 10-year contract with the Village of Elburn to mow and maintain the fields so their members could play games there, Ron Vohs said. The fields consist of two diamonds on the south side of Keslinger Road and west of the water tower in the Blackberry Subdivision.

"Obviously having these fields are a great asset to the organization," Vohs said. "It keeps our kids playing baseball and it keeps kids in town."

The fields have been dormant for a few years and were in need of repair. Field mix needed to be put down because it's a low-lying area that floods easily, Vohs said.

The organization could not begin repairs until a stretch of dry season in May. In order to get the large mounds of field mix onto the fields, the group took down a couple sections of fence.

Vohs said Elburn Baseball and Softball can accommodate outside organizations that want to rent or lease the fields. The rental fees would help sustain the organization, which is a nonprofit group run by parent volunteers, Vohs said.

The Elburn teams likely will use the fields into mid-summer, he said.
