More than 150 hockey players and more than 32 teams and clubs from across the state came together Saturday to pay tribute to a fellow athlete who lost his life to pediatric brain cancer in May 2013.
The Wheaton-based Ross K. MacNeill Foundation, established by the Longfellow Elementary School fifth-grader's parents in the wake his death, held its first annual memorial hockey tournament at Center Ice of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.
Events included a skills competition, 3-on-3 hockey tournament and a special ceremony at mid-ice, where Ross's family, friends and coaches led the crowd in a moment of silence at 11:33 a.m. in memory of his jersey number, "33." Afterwards, Ross's number was retired by his hockey club, the Glen Ellyn Admirals.
Proceeds from entry fees, raffles and food sales went to the foundation, which will use the more than $54,000 collected to fund pediatric brain cancer research.
