LOMBARD – A woman who was reportedly stabbed and beaten by a man she was romantically involved with testified in court Wednesday.

Demetrice Tompkins, 49, faces attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and armed violence charges for stabbing Crystal Ward in a Lombard apartment in December 2011, according to DuPage County State's Attorney's Office spokesman Paul Darrah.

The attack occurred in James Kirkwood's apartment in the 2200 block of South Stewart Avenue, Darrah said. Kirkwood is Tompkin's brother.

After the attack, Tompkins fled to another apartment where he had a short standoff with police before he was arrested, according to Darrah.

Tompkins faces up to 30 years in prison.

Closing arguments are expected this afternoon.
