Man arrested on porn charges in Channahon kills himself

QUEENS, NEW YORK – A man who was arrested in Channahon last week on child pornography charges killed himself Sunday shortly after being released on bail.

Suresh M. Manjanath, 45, of Tarrytown, New York, jumped off a tall building to his death Sunday, according to the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The New York-based publication The Journal News reported that Manjanath “jumped to his death from a building on 92nd Street in Jackson Heights about 1:30 a.m. Sunday," citing its sources as New York City police and medical examiner.

Will County jail records indicate Manjanath was released Friday after posting $100,000 cash on his $1 million bond. Manjanath was arrested May 27 on four counts of dissemination of child pornography and faced up to 30 years in prison.

Channahon Det. Adam Bogart said Manjanath met with an undercover decoy who posed as the mother of two young children at a local restaurant, where he allegedly offered her money to take lewd photographs of them. No actual children were involved in the sting arrest.

The investigation was conducted by Channahon police and the Illinois Attorney General's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which Bogart is assigned to.

Will County court records show Manjanath was granted permission to return to New York after a May 29 court hearing. He had to surrender his passport before leaving jail and was banned from using the Internet.

Prosecutors filed a motion Tuesday to end proceedings because of Manjanath's death, according to court records.
