Hinsdale Central wins tennis state title

Grabill tops Joyce for singles title, Downers Grove South fourth in team standings

Hinsdale Central's Eddie Grabill plays in a first-round match of the state tournament Thursday at Hersey High School. Grabill went on to win the title by defeating teammate Martin Joyce.

Hinsdale Central's boys tennis team put forth a strong performance at the state tournament over the weekend as the Red Devils won their third consecutive title.

Central scored 56 team points to finish well clear of Lake Forest (41) and New Trier (34). Downers Grove South placed fourth with 29 points.

Central singles players Eddie Grabill and Martin Joyce, last year's champion, met in the championship match with Grabill pulling out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win.

The doubles teams of Lope Adelakun and Chase Hamilton and Michael Czlonka and James Bruning both made it to the semifinals. Adelakun and Hamilton placed second while Czlonka and Bruning finished fourth.

Downers Grove South's Tony Leto rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to Joyce with two wins in the consolation bracket. Leto placed sixth.

South's Christian San Andres notched a top-12 finish after reaching the consolation quarterfinals.
