Lucas Urbanski spelled his two words correctly in the the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals on Thursday, but did not advance to Thursday night's final.

The finalists were selected by a combination of two spelling rounds in the semifinals and a written exam taken Wednesday evening.

Urbanski correctly spelled "epixylous" (growing on wood) in Round 6 of the semifinals and he correctly spelled "cataphora" in Round 5 of the semifinals, his first word of the day. "Cataphora" is the use of a grammatical substitute (such as a pronoun) that has the same reference as a following word or phrase.

Urbanski is the four-time reigning McHenry County spelling bee champion.
