DGN, DGS softball capture conference titles

Dale Ryndak’s home run and complete-game pitching performance led Downers Grove North’s softball team to a 1-0 win May 20 against Oak Park-River Forest in a key West Suburban Silver game.

That win gave the Trojans a leg up in the WSS race, and they captured the title with a 9-0 win Thursday against Hinsdale Central. North finished 11-1 in the WSS.

On the other end of town, the Mustangs completed a perfect run through the West Suburban Gold conference with a 9-1 win May 20 against Willowbrook.

The Mustangs scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, scored twice in the fourth and put the game away with four runs in the sixth.

In a contest between two of the top teams in the area, Glenbard North dealt South a 6-1 defeat Friday. The Mustangs bounced back with wins Saturday against defending state champion Minooka (5-2) and Richards (7-1).

Both the Trojans and Mustangs went on to win regional semifinal playoff games.

North fended off West Chicago for a 5-1 win at the Neuqua Valley regional, and South topped Plainfield North 10-0 at DGS. Both play in regional championship games at 11 a.m. Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Westmont

The Sentinels won their playoff opener 17-0 May 20 against Chicago Phillips to set up a showdown Saturday against Lisle in the regional championship game.

Westmont captured the regional title with a 4-2 win against the Lions and then topped Woodlands Academy 10-0 in a sectional semifinal on Wednesday.

The Sentinels face IC Catholic for the sectional title at 11 a.m. Saturday at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst.

BOYS TENNIS

Downers Grove South

Competing at the York sectional Saturday, the Mustangs earned the maximum two singles and two doubles berths to the state tournament beginning Thursday. They also won the sectional title.

Tony Leto won the singles title, defeating teammate Christian San Andres 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match.

Ryan McMillan and Zach Wood faced teammates Mitch Plys and Lawrence Hiquiana for the doubles title, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Downers Grove North

The Trojans finished second at the York sectional and earned a pair of state tournament berths in the process.

Mantas Kisielius and Chandler Downs bounced back from a semifinal loss to win 6-1, 6-2 in the third place match.

Mike Yong placed fourth in the singles draw to earn his state tourney spot.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Downers Grove North

The Trojans earned 10 state meet berths and in the process won the Class 3A Romeoville sectional, scoring 103 points to finish ahead of Bolingbrook (80.5).

Zack Smith, Ryan Clevenger, Tony Zea and Eric Wisz won sectional titles. Smith won the 3,200-meter run in 9:16.28. Clevenger captured the 1,600 race (4:17.02), Zea won the 800 run (1:56.94) and Wisz cleared 13 feet, 9 inches to win pole vault.

Smith also made it to state in the 1,600 as he finished third, and Jeremy Craven was third in the 3,200 for a spot at state.

Nicholas Steichmann was second in the shot put (50-1), Jazz Charrier second in long jump (22-10.75) and Nick Janicki third in discus (157-10) to make it to state.

The 4x800 relay was second (7:51.90) to earn a spot at the state meet.

Downers Grove South

The 4x400-meter relay won a title at the Romeoville sectional with a time of 3:23.46 to make it to the state meet starting Friday.

Jacob Amiri clocked a time of 1:57.77 in the 800 run to earn a state berth.

Westmont

Nick Dea won the 3,200-meter run at Friday’s Class 1A Lisle sectional with a time of 10:05.21 to earn a spot at the state meet.

Quinton Brown (50.96) and Tim Doll (51.32) were second and third in the 400 dash at the sectional, respectively, and both earned spots at state.

BASEBALL

Westmont

The Sentinels set a school record for wins in a season and captured their first regional title since 2007 with a 7-4 win Saturday against IC Catholic in a regional final at Timothy Christian.

Westmont (24-7-1) led 7-0 before IC plated four runs in the fifth inning.

Austin Loehman got the win on the mound, working 4 2/3 innings. None of the four runs he allowed were earned.

Zach Moran pitched 2 1/3 innings for the save and had two RBIs at the plate. Charlie Donovan also drove in two runs while Joe Donovan added an RBI.

The Sentinels face Guerin in a sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. today at Benedictine University.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs battled back from a 6-1 deficit Thursday to defeat Hinsdale Central 7-6 and followed that up with an 11-1, five-inning win against Proviso West the next day.

Zac Taylor was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs against Proviso while Rashaun Cowan went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs. Kyle May added two RBIs and Joey Engel scored twice.

Downers Grove North

The Trojans lost 7-0 Friday against DuPage Valley Conference champion Naperville Central. Joe Provenzano, Patrick Geraghty and Paul Cappetta each had a hit.

North defeated Hinsdale South 1-0 the previous day as Matt Bohanon drove in Brendan Shanahan with the game’s lone run in the fifth inning.
