The spring sports season is a busy time for college athletes, just like their high school counterparts. Here are a few athletes from Glenbard South and Glenbard West that competed for college programs this spring.
Krusen captures more CCIW honors
Ben Krusen (Glenbard West) notched College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference honors for the third consecutive year as a member of the North Central baseball team. Named to the CCIW second team, the junior pitcher went 6-3 on the spring with a 3.17 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 71 innings of work. He allowed 65 hits while walking only 14.
Titans tap Fazzari during deep playoff run
Amanda Fazzari (Glenbard South) started 46 games this spring for an Illinois Wesleyan softball team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Super Regional. The senior batted .313 with eight doubles, two home runs, 24 runs scored and 22 RBIs. She also walked 14 times.
Panthers put Mitch Gasbarro to work
Mitch Gasbarro (Glenbard South) ranked third on the Eastern Illinois baseball team with a .314 batting average this spring after starting 50 games. The sophomore infielder produced 15 doubles and two home runs while adding 46 runs scored and 12 RBIs. He was also hit by a team-high 11 pitches.
Ethan Gasbarro debuts for Valpo
Ethan Gasbarro (Glenbard South) got a taste of collegiate baseball action as a freshman on the Valparaiso squad. He made five appearances on the mound for the Crusaders and sported a 3.52 ERA.
Extra-base hits Evans' specialty
Nicole Evans (Glen Ellyn) started 32 games this spring as a freshman on the University of Illinois softball team. She had 22 hits, including four doubles and four home runs, and totaled 16 runs scored and 13 RBIs.
ACC all-tourney honors for Danielle Chitkowski
Danielle Chitkowski (Glenbard South) started all 49 games for the Syracuse softball team this spring. The sophomore produced 32 hits, including 11 doubles and five home runs, and finished with 20 RBIs and 16 runs. She also was selected to the Atlantic Coast Conference all-tournament team after going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs against Virginia Tech.
Dream debut for Stephanie Chitkowski
As a freshman at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Stephanie Chitkowski (Glenbard South) threw 51 1/3 innings this spring. She posted three wins and struck out 42 batters.
Trzaska gets shot with Armstrong Atlantic State
Jane Trzaska (Glenbard South) made 16 appearances within the pitching circle for the Armstrong Atlantic State softball team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships. The freshman threw 54 innings, compiling a record of 6-3 and a 3.89 ERA. She also contributed two hits, three walks, three RBIs and two runs scored offensively.
Concordia counts on Johnson
Meghan Johnson (Glenbard West) contributed both at the plate and in the pitching circle for Concordia University. The sophomore topped the team with a .327 batting average while adding eight doubles, 16 runs and 19 RBIs. She also led the squad in innings pitched, compiling an era of 2.87 in 109.2 frames.
