Bensenville firefighters fill the boot for muscular dystrophy

BENSENVILLE – The annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to benefit children and adults affected by muscle disease is returning to Bensenville.

Members of the Bensenville Fire Protection District Local 2968, along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will celebrate their 60-year partnership and kick off the firefighters' annual fundraiser, according to a news release.

Members of the Bensenville Fire Protection District will fan out with boots in hand for this year’s drive Friday at York Road and Grand Avenue and Irving Park and York roads.

Funds raised through the 2014 Bensenville Fill the Boot event will help support the association's programs of worldwide research, specialized health care services, and day-to-day support. The organization also sends children affected by muscular dystrophy and related diseases to a week-long, barrier-free summer camp at Timber Pointe Outdoor Center in Hudson, Ill., the release stated.

As the Muscular Dystrophy Association's largest national sponsor, the International Association of Fire Fighters fuels the organization's mission to find treatments and cures for life-threatening muscle diseases.

In 2013, more than 100,000 firefighters participated in Fill the Boot events across the country and raised $26.2 million. To date, the International Association of Fire Fighters has raised $530 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, according to the release.
