The subtle jewel in the crown

The Preakness Stakes, May 17 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, is the second race in the Triple Crown. This 139th running of The Preakness Stakes will have a purse of $1.5M.

First run in 1873, two years before the first Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes was named after a winning colt at Pimlico. The race is nicknamed “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because a blanket of yellow flowers is placed around the winner's neck. While the Preakness may not draw the media attention of the Derby, it still is a favorite among horse racing fans. This year, even more excitement surrounds the race, as experts weigh in on California Chrome, winner of the recent Kentucky Derby, and the horse’s potential to be a Triple Crown winner. It’s not been since 1978 that a single horse has won the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes (scheduled for June 7, this year.)

For those looking to experience their first live Triple Crown event, The Preakness Stakes might be the race to visit. Tickets are easier to get and the crowd in the building is controlled (thanks to advance grandstand ticket sales) so you won't have as much trouble getting around, although you will still have a long wait to place a wager.  And while the race itself is just about two minutes long the festivities make the Preakness and all-day event, filled with concerts, socializing and fanfare.

If you can’t get to Pimlico, local Off Track Betting sites have got you covered.  Facilities such as McQ’s Sports Dome in Bolingbrook, Stoney Point Grill in Mokena, Bookie Magee’s in Joliet and Shark City in Glendale Heights all offer full service restaurant and bar options, as well as HD flat panel TVs showing races from Pimlico and from all over the country.  Guest services staff are available to teach new fans how to wager.

Don’t miss the actions of this esteemed event, or the anticipation that surrounds a potential Triple Crown winner! You’ll never forget where you were and you’ll likely tell the story for years to come!
