Addison Trail senior athlete Kaleen Smith had a great showing at the West Suburban Gold outdoor conference meet on May 8. Smith, who didn't even compete with the outdoor track team last season, won the 100-meter dash and the long jump and was also a part of the Blazers' winning 4x200-meter relay in addition to placing second in the high jump. Smith, this week's Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about her strong meet.
What was your reaction to winning two individual events conference?
It's crazy. It's a lot of hard work put into it. I still can't believe I actually got it. There's so many people in our conference that are so good.
Going into the meet did you think you had a chance to have that much success?
I kind of knew that I would get into finals, but I didn't really expect to win it. I didn't think it would actually happen.
After only competing during the indoor track season last year, is it extra special to do well in outdoor this season?
Yeah it is. It's mind-blowing. I didn't really expect to improve because senior year usually you don't really improve that much, but this year I kind of launched forward.
What happened that helped you improve?
I don't really know. Just a lot of practicing with summer workouts, preseason through indoor and outdoor. I'm just happy that it happened.
