Elmhurst couple named Philanthropists of the Year

ELMHURST – An Elmhurst couple were named Philanthropists of the Year by the West Suburban Philanthropic Network (WSPN).

The parents of three children, Ken and Julia Wegner have contributed to Elmhurst College's science center, annual fun, scholarships and a lecture. They also financially support ovarian cancer research at Loyola Hospital through an endowment fund established in honor of Julia's mother, stated a WSPN news release.

They support Diocese of Joliet, Catholic Charities, American Cancer Society, Wounded Warrior Project, Immaculate Conception Parish, Maryville Academy, Alzheimer’s Association, and Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, along with other local and national organizations, according to the release.

In 1986, Ken Wegner became a founding member of EMH Foundation’s Special Event Committee. He's continued his involvement through a variety of positions and is currently chair of the EMH Foundation. In 2012, he was awarded the Robert E. Soukup Award for Leadership by the hospital, stated the release.

Ken is president of Jel Sert Company, headquartered in West Chicago. The company partners with American Childhood Cancer Organization, National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and Operation Homefront. It also sponsors local charities, stated the release.

Ken is also director of Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation and a member of Young Presidents’ Organization-Chicago Chapter. He was formerly school board president of Immaculate Conception Grade School and coached several community and school sport teams.

Like her husband, Julia Wegner was also a member of the EMH Foundation's Special Event Committee. She's also held a variety of positions at Immaculate Conception Grade School in the past and worked in fundraising for Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, stated the release.

Julia currently teaches baptismal preparation at Immaculate Conception Parish and is a member of the Chicago Bears' Bears Care Committee. She was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Award for Immaculate Conception Grade School in 2013.

The Wegners and other honorees will be recognized at the 12th annual Philanthropy Awards Luncheon May 21 at Eaglewood Resort and Spa, 1401 Nordic Road, Itasca.
