Hinsdale Central set to debut as host of state gymnastics meet

HINSDALE – This weekend is of something of a debutante's ball for Hinsdale Central.

The school has hosted big sporting events before, but this weekend it will be the focal point of the high school gymnastics community as its hosts the boys state meet.

"It's our first year doing it and we're all really nervous and excited at the same time," Central athletic director Dan Jones said. "We're not sure what to expect, but I think we're ready to go. We've hosted a lot of big events before, so I think we're ready to put on a great show."

Lincoln-Way East acted as host in recent years, so having the state finals at a high school is nothing new.

Hinsdale Central is no stranger to hosting big events.

In March, the school hosted supersectional games in both girls and boys basketball, and during the wrestling season it welcomed 24 teams for the two-day Rex Whitlatch tournament. The school even hosted two boys gymnastics invites earlier this spring. That experience will come in handy.

"We do have experience hosting large events," Jones said. "The only difference is it's the biggest boys gymnastics meet in the state. If it was basketball or wrestling or something we were more familiar with, there would be a little bit less concern about planning something like this."

Having hosted and set up for gymnastics meets in the past will help this time around. Jones said setup for state was planned for Thursday night and would take about two hours.

"We just need a bigger stage and a bigger head table, but that's about it," Jones said.

In all, somewhere between 50 and 75 volunteers from both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South should help makes things run smoothly during the two days of the state meet.

"I'll meet with all the volunteers and workers beforehand, and we'll make sure if they have questions or concerns they know where to find me or one of my assistants," Jones said. "We have a great staff and we're excited for this weekend."
