Downers Grove North soccer wins title at WeGo invite

Downers Grove North's girls soccer team won the West Chicago Invitational for the third time on Saturday, defeating the host Wildcats 3-2 to cap a 3-0 run at the tourney.

The Trojans also defeated Bartlett (2-1) and Glenbard North (2-1 in a shootout) at the tourney.


Downers Grove North

Dale Ryndak pitched a no-hitter against Hinsdale Central on Thursday in a 4-0 victory. She struck out eight and walked none, and only Central's only baserunners came on a pair of errors.

Offensively, Kaylee Newstrom and Jaclyn Pasakarnis had a run and RBI each. Ali Woitovich and Anne Lusher added one RBI apiece, and Kelsey Gockman and Claire Donahue each had a run.

The Trojans led Monday's game against Lyons Township 10-5 before play was suspended because of lightning. Zoe Varsbergs had four RBIs at the time.

Downers Grove South

South topped Proviso East 18-0 in five innings on Friday. Caitlyn Daly drove in three runs and scored three times, and Nicole Bowman, Payton Buresch and Dana Kremer scored plated two runs.

The Mustangs won 11-1 against Oswego on Saturday. Melissa Orton hit a home run and drove in six runs while Megan LoBianco had two RBIs.


Downers Grove South

Competing at the Glenbard West sectional, freshman Dominic Tommasone placed second in the all-around with a score of 51.90 and moved on to the state meet Friday and Saturday at Hinsdale Central.

Tommasone won on bar (9.150) and was second on floor (9.350) and parallel bars (8.70).

Evan Baird was fourth on vault (9.150) and earned an at-large state berth on floor (8.550).

As a team, the Mustangs finished second with a score of 143.20 and earned an at-large spot in the team competition at state.

Brock Herion earned at-large state berths in the all-around (46.250), rings (7.650), vault (8.80) and high bar (6.550).

Downers Grove North

Strah Sopcic and Tom Brethauer both earned automatic berths to the state meet when they competed at the Glenbard West sectional on Saturday.

Tom Brethauer placed third on rings (9.30) while Sopcic qualified for state on parallel bars (fourth, 8.40), pommel horse (fourth, 8.250) and rings (fifth, 8.4540). Sopcic also earned at-large state meet spots in the all-around (48.750), vault (8.750) and high bar (6.70)

Dylan Oddo (8.650 on floor), Jeremy Guinn (7.950 on pommel horse) and Tristan Leger (7.70 on rings) also earned at-large state meet berths.



Tim Doll won the 400-meter dash at Thursday's Interstate Eight Conference meet at Seneca with a time of 50.71 seconds that is ahead of his pace from a year ago, when he finished second in the state.

Doll anchored the 4x400 relay (third, 3:38.7) and ran with Scott Larem, BJ Zakhem and Quintin Brown.

The 4x800 relay of Mitch Perrotta, Tony Cordero, Larem and Zakhem ran placed second with a season-best time of 8:35.91. Perrotta was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:54.04.



Annie Carlson won three events at the Interstate Eight Conference meet. She clocked a 16.38 in the 100-meter hurdles, a 46.18 in the 300 hurdles and jumped 36 feet, 2 inches in the triple jump.

Carlson was third in the 200 dash. Maggie Arndt was third in both the 800 (2:36.39) and 1,600 (5:41.20), and Elisa Klewinski was third in the 100 dash (13.22).


Downers Grove North

Kelsey Stallter and Lucy Lu won the doubles title and Kiley Pooler was third in singles play as the Trojans tied for first place at Thursday's Naperville North sectional. Those three will participate in the state tournament at Eastern Illinois University Friday and Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Westmont's final regular season game is Friday's 4:30 p.m. home contest against Manteno.

GIRLS TRACK: Downers Grove North, Downers South and Westmont compete for state berths at Friday's sectional meets. Westmont is at Lisle at 4 p.m. DGN and DGS are at South at 4:30 p.m.

BASEBALL: Downers Grove North begins its final West Suburban Silver series of the season when it hosts Glenbard West for a doubleheader that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.

.37 Margin by which Downers Grove South's Michaela Hackbarth won the 400-meter dash at Thursday's West Suburban Gold meet. Hackbarth clocked a 59.55; she later won the 800.
