GLEN ELLYN – A 27-year-old man died Saturday after succumbing to injuries from a structure fire in Glen Ellyn.

Abdullah Rantissi was rescued by crews at the building located at 503 Duane St., then transported to Loyola Medical Center where he was admitted to the burn unit. Rantissi later died from injuries Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company.

The structure fire occurred at 5:43 a.m. Friday in a three-story building that has apartments on the second and third floors with various businesses operating out of the first floor, the release stated.

Smoke and fire were observed coming from a third-floor apartment, and the building was evacuated by the police department. The remainder of the building was searched by fire crews, and the fire extinguished shortly after 6 a.m., according to the release.

The DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force conducted an investigation and have not determined the cause of the fire at this time. There were no other injuries to residents or first responders.

Along with the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company, crews from Addison, Carol Stream, Glenside, Bloomingdale, Lisle, Woodridge, Lombard, York Center, Warrenville and Wheaton responded and assisted with the rescue and extinguishing efforts.

Several of the first-floor businesses were able to reopen later in the day, the release stated.
