GLEN ELLYN – Riverside Brookfield may not be in the running to defend the Metro Suburban Conference title, but the Bulldogs made sure to impact the race.
The Bulldogs won Friday's rubber game at Glenbard South 6-4 to take two out of three games in the series. The Raiders entered the series undefeated in the MSC.
RB (14-9, 6-6 MSC) scored four times in the third to take the lead and never let it go. Will Kincanon was 3-for-3 with a walk and Jimmy Doherty was 2-for-3 with a walk and a key RBI double in the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs an insurance run.
"We started off shaky with Illiana and we had the rough [series] loss against Ridgewood, but it's nice to come out here and beat a team that's been pretty solid and undefeated in the conference for sure," Doherty said.
The Raiders (16-7, 10-2 MSC) took advantage of five walks in the bottom of the fourth to plate four runs, but that's al they would score. Adam Martinson pitched 3.1 innings in relief for RB without allowing a run.
South is tied with Illiana Christian at 10-2 and Ridgewood is 12-3 with only the one series left, against the Raiders beginning May 20.
Glenbard South coach Mike Riley bemoaned his team's defensive miscues on Friday. He said the series loss to RB puts the pressure on the Raiders to sweep Illiana Christian in next week's series to maintain hopes of winning the conference.
"We know we'll see similar competition to what we saw this week," Riley said. "We've played the weaker part of the league so for us to have a chance we really need to have all three of those games. If we can get all three of those games then we just have to win the series against Ridgewood to win conference. We'll see how we respond."
