WHEATON – The attorney for one of three reputed gang members who allegedly beat, stabbed and killed a Wheaton man in November said he intends to claim self-defense.

Anthony Rios, 18, of West Chicago, is charged with first-degree murder alongside reputed members of the Satan Disciples gang Jonathan Jimenez, 19, of Aurora, and Alejandro Martinez, 17, of West Chicago, in connection to the death of Thomas Tecuatl, 22, according to previous Suburban Life reports.

At a party Nov. 16, 2013, in the 500 block of East Pomeroy Street in West Chicago, witnesses saw Tecuatl, a reputed member of the Surenos 13 gang, arguing with a group of rival gang members, reports said. Tecuatl allegedly brandished a knife against the defendants before fleeing.

The trio reportedly followed him with a variety of weapons. Tecuatl was allegedly hit in the head with a pipe, fell as he ran and was beaten by the defendants. He dropped the knife, which Jimenez admitted to picking up and using to stab him, according to reports.

Attorney Kathleen Colton, who represents Rios, said her client acted in self-defense.

"Based on my review of the case, the fact that the alleged victim had a knife raised aspects of self-defense," she said Friday.

Rios and Martinez are each charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of mob action, while Jimenez is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one of mob action.

Rios is due in court June 11, Colton said. Jimenez will next appear May 19 and Martinez is due May 28, according to DuPage County State's Attorney's Office spokesman Paul Darrah.
