Why Oriente was selected:
Oriente his a home run and drove in two runs to help the Mustangs defeat Hinsdale South 10-3 on Saturday.
Downers Grove South’s baseball team recently faced Hinsdale South in a key three-game West Suburban Gold series. Danny Oriente helped the Mustangs sweep the series and remain undefeated in conference as he went 5-for-10 in the three games with four extra-base hits and four RBIs. Oriente provided an exclamation point in Saturday’s 10-3 win with a solo home run in third inning. Oriente, the Sears Appliance and Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his home run Saturday, playing catcher the key to South’s success this season.
Have you hit any other home runs this year? What did see on the homer you hit against Hinsdale South?
I think I had one against Leyden. I was just trying to hit the ball hard and make solid contact.
Do you like playing catcher?
I’ve always been a catcher. When I was really young I played shortstop but I’ve been a catcher ever since seventh grade, probably. I like being a catcher. I like being in the middle of the action and being the captain of the infield.
What’s been the key to the team’s success this season?
We’re solid defensively. We’re making the plays we’re supposed to make. Offensively, we’re solid from the top down. If the top of the order is not getting it done, then the bottom of the order is and the other way around. We pick each other up and help each other out.
