Prep roundup: DGN’s Sopcic tops Silver on still rings

At the West Suburban Silver meet it hosted on Friday, Downers Grove North’s boys gymnastics team earned a score of 142.450 and placed third overall.

Strah Sopcic was second in the all-around with a score of 50.90 with a high score of 9.05 on rings.

Tom Brethauer won on rings with a score of 9.10.

Sopcic was third on parallel bars (8.80) and fourth on pommel horse (8.70).

The Trojans’ next meet is at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Glenbard West sectional.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs posted a score of 142.150 to win Saturday’s West Suburban Gold meet at Hinsdale South.

Dominic Tommasone scored a 52.90 and won the all-around by more than seven points. Tommasone won on vault (9.50), horizontal bar (8.750), pommel horse (8.70), parallel bars (8.450) and rings (7.80).

Evan Baird was second on horizontal bar (7.90) and third on vault (8.850), and Brock Herion was third on both parallel bars (7.850) and rings (7.50).

The Mustangs are back in action at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Glenbard West sectional.

SOFTBALL

Downers Grove North

The Trojans defeated Addison Trail 7-0 on Monday as Dale Ryndak plated three runs and Ali Woitovich added an RBI.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs enjoyed a successful weekend before facing Leyden in a doubleheader at the Chicago Bandits’ stadium in Rosemont.

Payton Buresch tossed a five-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 win against the Eagles, and Caroline Hedgcock followed it up with a three-hitter in a 5-0 win against Leyden.

South defeated West Suburban Gold foe Morton 13-3 on Friday, then won 10-0 and 1-0 in Saturday’s games against Glenbard West.

GIRLS SOCCER

Downers Grove South

A 5-0 win against Morton on April 29 preceded a pair of games at the Naperville Invitational on Thursday and Friday.

The Mustangs lost 3-0 against Wheaton North and then lost 3-0 against Rockford Boylan on Friday.

Tess Grannan scored the final two goals against Morton, and Kailee Miller, Miyax Leon and Autumn Rasmussen added goals.

Grannan had two assists, and Jamie Furio had the shutout in net.

Westmont

The Sentinels cracked into the win column with a 1-0 win against Wilmington on Thursday.

Brianna Gilley, Madeline Lubeck, Chloe Ma, Sarah Schlacks, Eliana O’Malley and Jessie Muncie combined for 19 shots, and it was Muncie that broke through for the game’s lone goal with just under 13 minutes to play.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Downers Grove North

Hosting their own invite over the weekend, the Trojans posted a 4-1 record with wins against Schaumburg (twice), Oak Lawn and Bartlett.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs competed at the Lincoln-Way East invite over the weekend and finished eighth overall, falling to New Trier in their final tourney match.

South next hosts Glenbard West at 6 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Westmont

At Friday’s Chicago Christian invite, Tim Doll had a pair of third-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (23.38) and 400 dash (52.40).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Downers Grove co-op

The combined squad from Downers Grove North and South defeated Lincoln-Way West 10-8 on April 30. The next day, the team lost 9-7 against St. Francis before defeating Wheaton United 7-3 Monday.

GAMES TO WATCH

SOFTBALL: At 4:30 p.m. today, Downers Grove North gets another crack at an Oak Park-River Forest team that won the first matchup this season.

BASEBALL: It's a big rivalry game as Westmont hosts Lisle at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Softball is also home against Lisle at the same time.
