Hernandez names health essay contest winners

State Rep. Lisa Hernandez recognized six students from local schools who participated in the sixth annual district-wide essay contest in commemoration of Children’s Dental Health Month at her office April 26.

Hernandez was joined by Dr. Jorge Zehak from the Chicago Dental Society and Monil Shah from Central Dental Associates in presenting the awards. The awards were given to to three students from intermediate school grades and three from junior high school grades.

Winners were selected from essay submissions from intermediate (fourth through sixth grade) and junior high (seventh through eighth grade) students.

First place winners were Ezzieh Hassan, fourth grade, Prairie Oak School; Ithzel Salcedo, seventh grade, Unity Junior High School. Second place winners were Lily Alvarez, fifth grade, Havlicek Elementary School; Jessica Cristobal, seventh grade, Unity Junior High School. Third place winners were Samantha Brito, fifth grade, Havlicek Elementary School; and Jannet Juarez, seventh grade, Little Village Academy.

The contest was co-sponsored by State Rep. Michael Zalewski and State Sen. Steven Landek. First place winners received computers, second place winners received tablets, and third place winners received school supplies.
