It’s an exciting time of the year here at Bolingbrook Park District – Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park is in the final stages of prep for what’s sure to be a great summer.

While Pelican Harbor plays a primary role in summer fun for many area residents, it serves an even more important function on a year-round basis – saving lives.

Accidental drowning is the second-leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 14, and the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4. More than 50 percent of infant drownings occur in a bath tub.

Gruesome statistics aside, it bears stating – teaching your child to swim is the number one thing you can do, besides buckling their seat belt, to keep them safe. Research has shown that if a child doesn’t learn to swim by the third grade, they likely never will.

The staff at Pelican Harbor wants to make sure everyone, young and old, are safe in the water, and offer lessons for all ages and skill levels.

Parkie’s Babies works with infants as young as 3 months, progressively mastering water safety and independence before transitioning to Parkie’s Paddlers. Remember, repetition is key for children learning a new skill, and it’s possible your child will need a session or two in the same class before advancing to the next level.

If you’re one of the roughly 37 percent of American adults that don’t know how to swim, Adult Swim Lessons are for those either looking to improve their technique or simply conquer a fear of the water.

Pelican Harbor is ready for another summer of safe, family fun. Are you?

Take the steps needed now to ensure you and everyone in your family is safe in the water this summer. Check for a full list of lesson dates and times.
