WEST CHICAGO – Family and Consumer Science classes from Community High School District 94 in West Chicago showcased their curriculum and work April 10 at the annual FACS Night.

Students chose this year’s theme of “...on the beach.”

Contemporary Life students designed the invitations and programs, provided emcees and music for the event and sold tickets at the door. They also transformed the cafeteria into a beach-themed reception area.

These students held a mock wedding on the beach which featured their peers who had been elected to participate. Contemporary Life students currently are studying relationships, marriage and careers in event planning.

Advanced Foods students made the wedding cake. Foods students at other levels baked and served cookies with punch to those at the event, baked and decorated party cakes and raffled them off and raffled off their decorated cupcake creations.

Child Development students and preschoolers from the student-run preschool at Community High School performed songs and dances.

Fashion Technology students modeled their clothing designs on the runway between the reception tables.

The $3 entrance fee and raffle proceeds raised more than $400 this year. The funds will contribute to an annual scholarship for a graduating senior who has taken Family and Consumer Science classes.

Students in these classes can expect to see some changes in the fall.

During the summer, updates to the program’s kitchens are planned, creating both home- and commercial-style kitchens to create new opportunities for students.

In addition, classrooms for child development, including dedicated preschool areas, also are in development.

As part of the curriculum, Child Development 1 students run a three-week preschool to apply what they have learned in a classroom setting. During second semester, Child Development 2 students run a 12-week preschool.
